Marta Zapparoli aka Penelopex
Marta Zapparoli is an Italian exsperimental sound artist, improviser , performer, musician . She received the MOVIN-UP Award 2006 for her field recordings based project An Audio Portrait of Berlin.
She lives in Berlin since 2007.
After
studied fine arts and soprano saxophone, Marta became increasingly
involved in the production of experimental radio shows,
installations and multimedia theatre, over the years she has
developed an extremely consistent body of work as a solo performer
and improviser. In addition Marta Zapparoli takes part in several duo
projects and collaborations (playing with Matmos, Martin Kuentz (as
XPRD), Alessandra Eramo , Julie Russe and Berlin all stars project
Splitter Orchester, that features Axel Dorner, Sabine Vogel, Claiton
Thomas,Clear Cooper, Liz Albee,Burkhard Beins, Mario De Vega, Ignaz
Shick and more.
She
took part at
several international festivals such
as: Internationale Festival für
Neue Musik Festival (Damstädt), Biegungen Bend/Break Festival
(Berlin), Simultan Festival (Timisoara),
SpektroOpen Festival (Istambul), Fusion Festival (Berlin), Das
Kleine Field Recording Festival (Berlin) among others in Germany and
all over Europe.
Her
music mainly consists in strongly narrative sonic pieces that she
builds using a wide variety of recording techniques and custom analog
tools (from lo-fi to hi end electronic) as well as found instruments
and objects.
Her
sonic explorations bring together the organic quality of real-world
sound and the versatility of live electronic processing. Although it
could be qualified as abstract, Zapparoli's music reveal an accurate
sense of nativity, her soundscapes, built using real-time tape
manipulation, home made devices and sounds that are considered
non-musical or overheard are usually qualified as dense, tense &
strongly emotional.
She
Released several albums on Umbrella Noise records, Idiosyncratics,
Audition Records, Nohmad Records and Zeromoon. She was also
extensively featured WDR3 open studio elektronische musik Deutschland
, and a variety of experimental radio broadcasts.

WHAT IS ABOUT MY SOUND RESEARCH !
"The sounds and information around us, are from a variable and immersive environment. Some of these unwanted environmental sounds and signals are constant and repetitive.
Particular compounds are invariably too low or high for the sensory human frequency response to detect, so are ignored by our cognition. Other, more audible sounds are not all handled by our everyday waking consciousness.
These more than classical field recordings also contain low emv field, natural radio, weather phenomena, radio, wideband and wireless communication signals of all kinds which I utilize for my recordings, which can be picked up with multiple devices such as, ultrasound and VLF natural, self build contact microphones with preamplifier.
First of all, time of day and location play a influencing role in the recording of my sound-works, as does the technical equipment used.
A spontaneous tour through an urban or natural landscape inspired entirely by my feelings evoked by their surroundings embrace the natural and different energies of the environment.
My personal experience and awareness throughout the recording process is fundamental
for the development of my research and the progressive evolution of
future pieces. The
selected moments I recorded all interrelate through this process.
When I have an idea of the sound-scape I want to compose,during the live performance I improvise with combinations of recordings and real-time manipulation and mixing. The signals, sounds and noises from the real world are transformed in a surreal scape where the time, situations, spaces and locations are reinvented from their original form creating a different horality and awareness ."
My sound research is a constant investigation related to noise pollution which disrupt the activity or balance of human life and also following Psycho-geography studies .

I draw my inspiration from the narratives and metaphors of a variety of
impacts from different locations and situations. Particularly when lost
in a city, you
find yourself at the wrong end of the town and unforeseeable scenarios
begin to unfold. These are often quite unique experiences within a
certain period of time,
landscape or corner of society. The process of recording can become
playful when exiting your everyday boundaries,
for example - home, to enter a more complex terrain where paradoxically features and structures are nullified, these may include: natural environments and urban architectural spaces, the silence and natural abandoned places, unpredictable movements, the noise of giant field, defective technology, misplaced animals, "dispunctuality", unforeseen natural sound effects or other cataclysms of nature and more...."
